National Minimum Wage & National Living Wage Increases from April 2026
From 1st April 2026, the UK’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates will increase, bringing changes for employers and employees across all sectors.
The National Living Wage for those aged 21 and over will rise to £12.71 per hour, with corresponding increases for younger workers and apprentices. These updates reflect ongoing efforts to support workers with the rising cost of living while maintaining fair pay structures.
Updated Rates from April 2026
- Age 21 and over: £12.71
- Age 18–20: £10.85
- Apprentice rate: £8.00
- Age 16–17: £8.00
The apprentice rate applies to individuals aged under 19, or those aged 19 and over who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. After this, they are entitled to the minimum wage rate for their age group.
What This Means for Employers
Employers should take steps now to ensure they are ready for the changes, including:
- Updating payroll systems with the new rates
- Reviewing pay structures to ensure compliance
- Checking the impact on salary sacrifice arrangements
- Ensuring working hours and pay calculations meet minimum wage requirements
Failure to comply with National Minimum Wage legislation can result in penalties, so it is essential to review your processes ahead of the April deadline.
